Elizabeth Trice Loggers, M.D., Ph.D. et al., Implementing a Death with Dignity Program at a Comprehensive Cancer Center, New England Journ of Medicine, April 2013 [full article] | [Abstract]

"In 1997, Oregon became the first state in the United States to pass legislation that offered a “physician-assisted” approach to dying for adults with poor short-term prognoses. The Washington State legislature followed Oregon more than a decade later, passing an almost identical law, the Washington Death with Dignity Act, in November 2008....
In response to the Washington law, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance developed a Death with Dignity program, adapted from the existing programs in Oregon. This article describes the implementation and results of our Death with Dignity program, designed to adhere to legal regulations, maintain safety, and ensure the quality of patient care...."

Hospital Discharge & Transitions of Care

Healthcare transitions (Referrals to specialists, Discharge from hospitals to home or Skilled Nursing Facilities, etc.) and the manner in which Medicare and private insurance companies deal with them, are major concerns in retirement communities such as Port Ludlow.

Our PLVC Health Committee is considering organizing and presenting a FORUM which would cover these and related topics, including an update on Medicare and Healthcare Reform regulations and how they affect the way in which patients and their caregivers need to connect, and move between, different healthcare services in our increasingly specialized but all-too-often seemingly disjointed healthcare system. [This forum was presented on Nov 15, 2014 (Click for details!)]

This Web site is "under construction", i.e. it represents many kinds of "work in progress". It originated in January 2010 as part of a community effort to assemble wellness oriented information and Web sites which were potentially useful for the discussion of health issues and options for residents of Port Ludlow (Washington). It became the unofficial Web site of the Port Ludlow Health & Wellness Committee in 2011 when the Port Ludlow Village Council sponsored and established this committee, consisting of three initiatives or "tracks", namely: organizing quarterly Health & Wellness Forums, the establishment of an Education Resource Center, and the facilitation of Support Groups.

It is hoped that the Web site will prove useful in helping residents access appropriate and reliable online information -- with or without additional one-on-one navigational assistance. We will try to go beyond linking to information about providers, disease conditions and treatment options, but also to refer to choice situations and "decision aids", i.e. concepts and tools suitable for preparing for and engaging in shared decision-making with physicians and other providers.

The individuals behind this assembly of resources cannot be responsible for the content of the sites to which they have provided links. No part of this site should ever be construed as providing medical advice. (See full disclaimer on the bottom of this page!)

All users are urged to provide critiques & suggestions related to this site to the organizers of the Resource Center.

PLHEALTH.ORG is loosely connected to other Port Ludlow Web portals. These Web sites (Port Ludlow Archives, The Voice, Port Ludlow Today and Port Ludlow Village Council) are based on the volunteer work of Port Ludlow residents committed to improving communication within the community using different Internet technologies (including for some of them, "content management systems" [CMS]). These sites differ in content, organization, focus and intent; thus, they add up to a wealth of information and a rich local knowledge base, probably quite unique for a community of the size of Port Ludlow. Port Ludlow's Health and Wellness Committee again invited to share the tent of the Village Council advertized its numerous outreach activities during this year's Festival-by-the-Bay.

8 year-old Benjamin K. from the Methow Valley took some time off from preparing his family's home for the next wild-fire evacuation to visit his grandparents and the Festival-by-the-Bay where he volunteered for distributing free samples (Sanitizers, bandages, pens, forms for personal health records, etc.) donated by local hospitals to the Port Ludlow Health Committee.

Kids visiting the PLVC's Health & Wellness Booth enjoyed a variety of hands- and brains-on activities, here in front of a brain-teaser test and various heart and brain models and posters.

The Resource Center has a very unique "physical presence" in form of dispersed displays and locations of posters and educational materials (click!). Both, the Beach Club and the Bay Club, have very generously loaned us display areas, in addition to permitting us to make educational notebooks and handouts available to residents. In the lounge (coffee room) at the Beach Club we show educational posters and display at least one of our "Notebooks". In the Bay Club, Notebooks on a variety of health topics can be found on the bottom book shelf on the left side of the lounge. We will update these displays and notebooks as often as possible.

Of course, this very WebSite is also a very important part of the Resource Center, largely because the Internet provides such a limitless access to health resources. We have tried hard to create a portal to these global resources with a distinctly local, portludlow'ish bias. The rationale for this attempt is obvious for information resources related to the provision and location of health care services. However, also the presentation of information, digitally accessible everywhere, about health conditions, diagnoses, treatments and research, has, to an extent, been biased in favor of local and regional information, largely due to the prominence of the Puget Sound area as a center of high-qualityhealth care and health-related scientific research, and the numerous positive impacts this proximity has on the nature and quality of health care available to Port Ludlow residents. Importantly, this WebSite is "work in progress" to be updated and continuously "under construction" -- however inadequately.

Any comments? Find us on Facebook (under "Wellness for Port Ludlow") or send us an Email at . (August 2013)
